Is a Public Adjuster Worth It? Arizona Homeowner Results

Arizona homeowners recover 2-3x more on insurance claims with a public adjuster. See real settlement results and learn when hiring one makes financial sense.

By Joe Hundley

The most common question we hear at Copper State Adjusting is simple: “Is hiring a public adjuster actually worth it?” The short answer is yes — the math almost always works in the homeowner’s favor. The longer answer involves real numbers from real Arizona claims.

The Settlement Gap Is Real

Study after study confirms that homeowners who use public adjusters receive significantly higher insurance settlements than those who handle claims on their own. The Office of Program Policy Analysis and Government Accountability (OPPAGA) found that public adjuster-assisted claims average substantially higher payouts than unassisted claims for the same types of damage.

Why? Because insurance companies have professional adjusters working to minimize payouts. Without a professional on your side, you are negotiating against trained experts whose job is to pay you as little as possible.

Real Results From Arizona Claims

Here are actual settlement improvements from Copper State Adjusting clients in Arizona:

Hail Damage — Mesa, AZ

  • Insurance company’s offer: $12,400
  • Settlement after our involvement: $34,870
  • Increase: +181%

The homeowner’s roof was damaged during a monsoon hailstorm. The insurance company’s adjuster spent 25 minutes on the roof and approved a partial repair. Our inspection documented damage to the entire roof surface, gutters, siding, window screens, and exterior paint that the carrier’s adjuster missed entirely.

Water Damage — Scottsdale, AZ

  • Insurance company’s offer: $7,800
  • Settlement after our involvement: $19,200
  • Increase: +146%

A burst pipe caused water damage to a kitchen, hallway, and master bedroom. The insurer approved surface-level drying and paint touch-ups. Our moisture meter readings showed water penetration behind walls and under tile flooring that required full demolition and reconstruction.

Fire Damage — Phoenix, AZ

  • Insurance company’s offer: $45,000
  • Settlement after our involvement: $88,000
  • Increase: +96%

A kitchen fire caused structural damage and smoke contamination throughout the home. The insurer’s estimate covered the kitchen reconstruction but drastically underestimated smoke remediation costs for the rest of the house. Our scope included full HVAC cleaning, contents cleaning, and structural deodorization.

When Is a Public Adjuster Worth It?

A public adjuster adds the most value in these situations:

Claims over $10,000. The larger the claim, the larger the gap between what the insurance company offers and what you are owed. On small claims under $5,000, the contingency fee may not leave enough margin to make representation worthwhile.

Structural or hidden damage. When damage extends behind walls, under flooring, into ductwork, or across multiple rooms, insurance company adjusters consistently undercount the scope. This is where professional documentation tools like thermal imaging and moisture meters change the outcome.

Denied or underpaid claims. If your insurance company has already denied your claim or issued a settlement you believe is too low, a public adjuster can reopen the claim and renegotiate. Many denied claims get reversed with proper documentation.

Complex damage types. Fire, smoke, mold, and large-scale water damage involve multiple trade categories, specialized remediation, and layered coverage provisions. Insurance companies exploit this complexity to underpay.

Commercial properties. Business interruption calculations, equipment replacement, and inventory loss add layers of complexity that require professional advocacy.

When Might It Not Be Worth It?

We are honest about this: if your claim is straightforward, small, and your insurance company is handling it fairly, you may not need a public adjuster. A broken window or a minor appliance leak that costs $2,000 to repair may not benefit from professional representation.

That said, even on smaller claims, a free claim review costs you nothing and gives you an informed opinion on whether your insurer’s offer is fair.

The Cost vs. The Return

Public adjusters in Arizona typically charge 10-15% of the settlement on a contingency basis. You pay nothing upfront. If we do not increase your settlement, you pay nothing at all.

Here is the math on the hail damage example above:

  • Without a public adjuster: $12,400
  • With a public adjuster (after 15% fee): $29,639
  • Net gain to the homeowner: $17,239

Even after paying the contingency fee, the homeowner walked away with more than double what the insurance company originally offered.
